The Super Powers of Amethyst

February 24th, 2016

Well, okay, a lot has changed – but let me explain what I mean. In the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans, amethyst was thought to hold special powers for those who wore the gemstone. Greek mythology associated amethyst with Bacchus, the god of wine and it was considered the go-to gem to ward off intoxication (not an easy task considering how heavy the wine flowed back then). In fact, the word amethyst is derived from the Greek word amethystos, which translates to not drunk. By the same token, it was thought to offer greater wisdom and security and to help the wearer keep a balanced mindset.

So, getting to my point, much like many of us who turn to apps that promise to make us smarter, or meditation to clear our minds, back then, people turned to amethyst. I can tell you from experience that most women these days would prefer to wear a gorgeous amethyst pendant to sitting cross-legged on a gym mat. But, even if you don’t believe in the gemstone’s super powers, you cannot deny its beauty. It has been featured in royal crown jewels and was once considered as valuable as ruby, emerald and sapphire.

Believing in the healing powers of amethyst myself (or at least hoping it will keep my love of wine at bay), I’ve made sure we have a unique selection of stunning amethyst pieces in our stores. Whether you’re envisioning that deep purple amethyst color set into a ring or earrings, or you just want something to keep you from drinking that fourth glass of wine, come into Wilson & Son and we’ll help you find the perfect piece (no questions asked).
